Magnic Light is the first contactless dynamo driven bike light system with no additional components in the wheels. Energy is drawn contactless from the rotating bicycle wheels by making use of eddy currents effected by strong magnets. This new technique is the basis of our completely encapsulated bike light with no batteries and no external cables but with an enormous efficiency factor. For a short first impression watch our Magnic Light video.
If you are interested in Magnic Light and like to see this new technique on the road or better want to enlight your cycling with Magnic Light, please back our Kickstarter project (click on the Kickstarter button to get to the project which has a new better video waiting for you):
No matter if you back us with 1 dollar or you choose the complete set, everything helps to make this project become real. If we don't reach the funding goal of US$ 50.000 no money will be paid by our backers (via Amazon Payments) and until the project ends you can change or cancel your backing amount at any time. And the most important: Spread the word.
Our core team consists of Dirk Strothmann and Kurt Pohlmann with assistants from family and friends. We love cycling especially racing bicycles but our light equipment for cycling in the dark was far from perfect so far.
The idea for Magnic Light was born on June 18th 2011. After a nice pasta party at home in preparation for a local 6 miles night race the next day (Die Nacht von Borgholzhausen) we made some experiments with eddy current brakes for bicycles. Talking about the mechanism behind and especially the nice fact that aluminium rims can be used although aluminium is not magnetic but conductive we got a cool idea: If eddy current brakes work with aluminium wheels the opposite should be no problem either! Shouldn't it be possible to build a bicycle dynamo that absorbs magnetic energy from the wheels?
